Choice of materials for a new roof
If you decide or indeed if you have no other choice! to have a new roof installed on your home you will quickly realise that it’s difficult to know roofing material is best to use. If you do a little research online you will read lots of contrasting opinions on the best materials to use for a new roof and tonnes of other contradictions. The also information and points of view also differ based on people’s geographical location. If you are based in Scotland, Collins Roofing & Solar Solutions already know the more likely solutions for your new roof and we can discuss and explain why when we visit you to quote the job.
To be honest given the huge list of roofing materials available today and with all of them having their own merit for different projects and situations, its best to leave it to the professionals when choosing materials.?
We can source any kinds of material to install on your new roof including:
- Slate tiles
- Metal (aluminium)
- Asphalt composition shingles
- Flat asphalt
- Other types of rubber
- Plastic polymer
- Clay tiles
- Concrete tiles
- Lead
- Rosemary
- Felt
There at least a dozen more types of roofing material we could list here. To be very honest although you may have a preference on material or perhaps have been advised on the best kind to use it’s best left for the professionals to inspect the roof and conclude what the most suitable option is.

There are some nice pointers and fundamentals in this video that point key points to consider when having a new roof installed
How much does a new roof cost in the Glasgow area?
Based on new roofing contracts we have worked on a new roof in Glasgow will cost anywhere between £4,000 all the way up to £40,000 depending on the homeowner’s requirements and the roofs size, dimensions and difficulty of installation.
During their initial enquiry customers who contact us looking for a new roof are almost always looking for a cost upfront, we understand why people want this and realise it can be frustrating when you are trying to budget for a new roof and other home improvements and you are simply looking for a cost.
What we say to you in these circumstances is that it’s extremely difficult and even borderline impossible to provide a cost over the phone. If you do however have pictures of your house, architect drawings or anything else that you can send us, we will try our best to provide you with a ballpark figure to ensure we are all talking the same language before we come out to measure and give you a more accurate quotation.
“We just had a garage extensions completed on our house in Bearsden, Tommy and his team came highly recommended to us from two sets of friends who he had done some work for. We had been looking for a while for a reliable roofer to complete our last home improvement and Tommy and the guys finished the job quickly and professionally for a fair price. We will be keeping your number for any other roofing needs we may have over the years and passing it on to any friends or family, thanks from Tracy and Graeme.“
How long does it take to install a roof?
Similar to cost, the length of time to install a new roof is very difficult to say until we know the specifics for the job at hand. Once again if we base our answer from roof installations we have worked on the past, the quickest full roof installation we have done is around 4 days and the longest has been anywhere up to 4 or 5 weeks.
Again this is a really ambiguous question with things like the roof size, your specific requirements, roof materials and Scottish weather to consider.
The best way to get both accurate costs and timescales for having your new roof installed is to arrange a free quote by calling us or completing our short website form at the bottom of this page.
